East Midlands Airport (EMA) sits at Castle Donington, roughly 14 miles south-west of Nottingham city centre. Off-peak the drive is a comfortable 25 minutes; during the morning rush on the A453 and M1 it can stretch closer to 40. This guide covers realistic timings, the routes we use, and how a fixed fare works.
How long does the journey actually take?
From Nottingham city centre (NG1) the typical door-to-terminal time is 25 to 35 minutes. From West Bridgford or Clifton it is often a few minutes quicker; from Arnold, Mapperley or Gedling add roughly 10 minutes because you cross the city first.

The routes we use
The standard route is the A453 to junction 24 of the M1, then the airport spur — direct and predictable. When the A453 is congested we use the A52 westbound and pick up the M1 at junction 25, which is slightly longer in distance but often quicker between 07:00 and 09:30.
What time should you be picked up?
Airlines at EMA generally ask you to arrive two hours before a short-haul departure. Working backwards, that means a pickup around three hours before take-off from most Nottingham addresses — a little more for very early summer departures when the drop-off zone queues.
What a fixed fare includes
Our EMA fares are quoted before you travel and do not change with traffic or waiting at the barrier. Flight tracking is included on the return leg, along with 60 minutes of free waiting after your flight lands, so a delay does not become an extra charge.
